Sven Hedin on a Camel

Creator: Carl Milles
Date: 1932
Medium: bronze
Notes: Sven Hedin was a Swedish explorer of Asia, and a long-time friend of Carl Milles. Milles said of the sculpture, "When I began this piece at Cranbrook I had to study how to making a camel without copying the Chinese. I don't like how animals are made in our time. The body should be thick and big to compete with the long thin legs. The Chinese understood this. This is what I tried to do with this camel."
